Committee 2010-2011

YOUR MCR COMMITTEE

The MCR Committee are always happy to receive feedback or suggestions from members of the MCR. Please feel free to contact us at the addresses below, or leave a note in our pidges. For a full list of welfare contacts, see the Welfare page.

Christopher Austin My name is Christopher, and I am a 2nd year BPhil Philosophy student. As your president, my job is to represent the MCR in various meetings with the governing body of the college and to make sure your voice is heard therein. I am also responsible for heading the MCR Committee, where I serve as an administrator for all of the various goings on in the committee that directly affect the collective interests of the graduate student body. As for my (non-philosophical, non-MCR) interests, I enjoy the following, and in the following order: (1) being a vampire (in every sense I can manage), (2) caffeine and nicotine and (3) kittens.

The tag to which I respond is Ana. Apart from being the clerk to the House, I am in charge of putting into force plan B(old) in the highly unlikely event of plan A(ustin) failing. If, however, plan B should fail too, I can always guarantee for the success of plan C(hocolate). In case you would like to contact me and e-mail is out of order, do come to breakfast to Oriel Hall or try the local libraries, book and tea shops. I am always in the mood for a great chat over a decent piece of cake and tea!

My name is Jonathan Craven, treasurer of the MCR, reading for an MBA at Saïd Business School. My job is to seek above-average returns for our investments through sophisticated hedging strategies involving carry trades, exotic derivatives, and occasional speculation in commodities futures, when the opportunity presents itself. I also write cheques for stuff.

Hi, my name is Seirian and I’m the Social Secretary for the MCR – which basically means I organise fun stuff for people to do when they’re not working! We hold cocktail nights, exchange dinners with other colleges, black-tie dinners, end-of-term parties, and other sociable events throughout each term. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to get in touch!

As Bar Manager I feel my role is fairly self-explanatory, taking care of what you get from your friendly MCR bar and trying to make sure there is enough of that. Thus, I provide the means by which anyone in the MCR is able to stand one another. I’m happy to take requests for additional stock, so feel free to get in touch with me if you want to have something exotic and I promise I will think about it.

As Environmental Officer, I spend my time cultivating intimate relationships with all living things. I’m studying my MSc Environmental Change & Management, and am open to dealing with any eco-issue you may have. From reducing Oriel’s carbon footprint, circulating weekly environmental events and announcements, and ensuring recycling is as easy as falling out of bed, I’m here to help green your college.

I’m Blake Ewing, Male Welfare Officer and a DPhil student in the Politics Department. It is my job to ensure that DPhil and masters students have an MCR contact for any welfare-related issues. Even though I am the Male Welfare Rep, I’m happy to chat and offer a cup of tea to Oriel ladies.

I’m Jose Miguel Mendoza, JMH representative and a DPhil student in the Law Faculty. Please share with me all of your JMH-related issues, comments and questions. Has your heating stopped working? I’m Lauren Fletcher from the USA and a DPhil student in the Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Planetary Physics department. As your MCR Food Rep., I am in charge of ensuring that your dining experience at Oriel is the best that it can be. I am also responsible for arranging our traditional (and famous!) 2nd Desserts that take place in the MCR after each Sunday Formal Hall. I am always looking for help with these and am happy to chat with anybody regarding any special needs or concerns they may have. I am constantly taking notes from the students and working regularly with the College Staff and Chef to ensure that the variety of the needs of our students is met. The College is especially mindful of special dietary needs for whatever reason. Whether your sushi was over-cooked, your roasted venison came tartar, or your soup came as…well, soup, please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any comments or questions regarding the Oriel Dining Services or MCR 2nd Desserts.
