Committee 2011-2012

YOUR MCR COMMITTEE

The MCR Committee are always happy to receive feedback or suggestions from MCR members. Please feel free to contact us at the addresses below, or leave a note in our pidges. For a full list of welfare contacts, see the Welfare page.

Caroline Knight My name is Caroline, and I’m in my second year of a DPhil in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. As MCR President, I am responsible for the overall running of the MCR and lead the MCR Committee. I also represent the MCR’s interests at College meetings. When I’m not scanning pregnant women, delivering babies or doing MCR “stuff”, I tend to run around Oxford burning the candle at both ends! I love social events, whether bops, dinners or balls, and have a weakness for fancy dress.

Lauren Fletcher Lauren, an American Yankee in King Arthurs Court, is reading for a D.Phil in Physics which focuses on the development of new sensor technologies necessary for the search for life on Mars and other planets and uses terrestrial extreme environments in Peru, Chile, Africa, Iceland and Antarctica as analogs to the harsh conditions of Mars. His areas of expertise include: Environmental bio-technology and biological sciences, systems engineering and space systems, physics, environmental engineering and sciences, planetary sciences, education and outreach, and global challenges in Latin America. Other interests include snow ski racing, social dancing, live theater and music, movies, and cooking.

Ingrid von Glehn I would love to plagiarise the previous treasurer’s blurb, but I don’t think I have permission.
My version is therefore along the lines of:
I’m Ingrid von Glehn, the treasurer of the MCR, reading for a DPhil in Maths. My job is to write cheques for stuff.

Chris Young (the elder) I’m Chris, an MSt student in Modern Languages and one of the two MCR Social Secretaries. My job involves planning and co-ordinating social events throughout the year: film nights, group excursions, cocktail nights, exchange dinners, and other forms of more or less organised fun. I also like to keep the MCR informed of recreational goings-on around the University. Where the Oriel MCR termcard is concerned, suggestions for last-minute additions are always welcome; wherever possible, Luiz and I will make it happen!

Luiz Guidi Hello! My name is Luiz and, when I am not struggling trying to learn a bit about neuroscience, I team up with Chris to organise the social life of our MCR. Feel free to drop us a line and get in touch with suggestion for events, ask questions or go for a coffee or a drink.

Phil Gemmell As Bar Manager, I run the MCR bar as my own personal fiefdom. However, as with all the best tyrannical despots, I do try and cater as best I can to the people grazing in my land. I do this by trying to make sure the bar is stocked with tasty drinks (for my definition of tasty). If your definition and my definition differ, however, get in touch, and I will consider stocking other things.

Daniel Barron I’m a second-year MPhil in Geography and the Environment. I love trees and long walks on the beach. My job as Environmental Representative is to work with the staff, fellows and students to make Oriel as sustainable as possible. There are loads of interesting ways we can do this – reducing water and electricity use in residence halls and serving more local food in Hall are just two that interest me – and I’d love to hear from you if you have ideas of your own!

Devika Jina Hello! My name is Devi and I’m studying MSt Study of Religion. As Female Welfare Officer, it’s my job to make sure that my fellow Orielenses are happy and kept up to date with any welfare and equal opportunities information, both at Oriel and Oxford as a whole. I’m always happy to help with any MCR members with welfare related issues, or just have a chat (with cake, if you’re lucky).

Ira Leeds I’m Ira and currently on a mission to enjoy Oxford to the fullest while bolstering credentials at Saïd Business School for an MBA. In my American day-job I’m completing training in clinical medicine, which makes me (almost) qualified to look after the welfare of the fine gentlemen of the Oriel MCR. Couple of critical things to know about me: I love talks over coffee, working lunches, and impromptu medical evaluations. Please feel free to reach out to me anytime.

Debbie Potter I’m Debbie Potter, a fourth-year undergraduate in Classics and your JMH Rep. Answers available to a wide variety of questions (yes, that bizarre noise is in fact the fire alarm; no, you cannot conceal a pet capybara in a JMH room…). Useful keys also available from me, hopefully. From bikes to barbecues, drop me a line and I’ll do my best to help.

Maria Eliades Hi, I’m Maria Eliades, Food Rep and MSt student in Modern Greek. I’m the one to turn to for our infamous Second Dessert, complaints about the food at Oriel and special food-related events. I’m also quite happy to talk about food in general. I like trying new recipes and I love a good chat over coffee, so don’t be a stranger.

Justin King-Lacroix Hi, I’m Justin, I’m reading for a D.Phil in Computer Science, and I have two hats. The dark and sinister one turns me into the shadowy IT Rep, known to leap tall servers in a single bound. The not-so-dark (and, I hope, not-so-sinister) one turns me into your friendly LGBTQ Rep, a role I share with Daivy Babel. Feel free to drop me a line; I’m happy to help, happy to talk, and I might even have a hat for you.

(I also dance Cuban salsa, so if you’re up for a dance, come and find me!)
