Oriel Graduate Accommodation
The College buildings are situated on High Street. On one side of Oriel Street are the original buildings, with three tranquil quadrangles; on the other side is the Island Site, a more recent addition to the College which was created to provide additional undergraduate and graduate accommodation as well as teaching and seminar rooms.
Take a 360 degree tour of Oriel College.
College
Whilst College accommodation means you are only a stone’s throw away from the MCR and rest of the College, you are expected to eat in Hall more often and this is reflected in the small size of the staircase kitchens. There are bathrooms and showers on all staircases, and many rooms even have en-suite facilities. The central location of Oriel means that the Bodleian Library and Radcliffe Camera are just across the road, and all the laboratories and faculty libraries are within easy walking distance. The city’s shops, cinemas, theatres and restaurants are very close.
James Mellon Hall
There is also student accommodation less than a mile away at the college annexe, James Mellon Hall. The site at James Mellon Hall is split into the main building (which is known as JMH), David Paterson House, Goldie Wing (which was previously a Convent), Larmenier House and a few cottages (all but the last one house some graduates). All rooms in JMH, David Paterson House and Goldie Wing are ene–suite. Larger kitchens are found at James Mellon Hall because Oriel appreciates that it won’t always be convenient to dine in College. Whilst James Mellon Hall is about 10 minutes walk from College, it is much more peaceful than the middle of the city and has the advantage of having a Tesco supermarket just down the road (open 6am till 12am most days) and a variety of bars and other shops. James Mellon Hall also has an excellent Common Room, a Weights Room with Gym, a Squash Court, and a large lawn, lovely for those summer afternoon BBQs
See some photos from the 2005 JMH barbecue.
All graduate rooms have Ethernet connections with internet access at no charge. Additionally telephone accounts can be set up in individual rooms — incoming calls and calls within the University network are free. Rooms with phone lines are subject to a phone charge of £25 per annum.
Graduates are only guaranteed accommodation for the first year of their degree. Graduates requiring College accommodation in their second and third years are entered into a ballot to establish an order of priority for the remaining College rooms available (of which there are normally 10–20). Since the College recognises the importance of its graduates sharing in the many and varied opportunities of College life, Oriel is working towards a policy of accommodating all graduate students in fee–paying status. Unfortunately Oriel College has no accommodation suitable for married students.
