The Middle Common Room (MCR)
The term ‘Middle Common Room’ refers both to the collective graduate community at Oriel College and to the Common Room that we all share. The Common Room itself is located on the first floor of Staircase 35 on the Island Site, and has a very impressive view of Oriel Square. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for MCR members and their guests.
The MCR takes a number of newspapers and periodicals and has recently refurbished kitchen facilities including an oven, microwave and dishwasher. The Oriel MCR is the envy of many colleges as we are one of only a handful of MCRs in Oxford which has its own bar! The graduate–run bar is regularly open on Friday, Saturday (our weekly cocktail night!) and Sunday evenings, as well as other times when there is a committee member willing to open it. Tea and coffee are available at all times. The MCR has a new wide screen television, Freeview, VCR, DVD player, X–Box (plus several games), stereo system, and even a piano.
The Common Room is particularly busy after lunch and in the evenings, when many members drop in for a coffee to catch up with all the latest gossip.
Every year the MCR elects a President and a Committee to run the Common Room. The President and Committee represent the interests of graduates to the College. The Committee is composed of experienced members who organise the MCR’s social events and offer advice to graduates on a host of different issues

Oriel MCR is renowned for being one of the most social and friendly in the University, and it is the responsibility of the Committee to ensure that this remains the case. Every term the social secretary organises a full programme of events, which include Guest dinners, Exchange dinners with other colleges, live jazz nights, film nights, cocktail nights and nights out in Oxford’s many restaurants and night clubs
